About Sydney

Beach babe by day, sequinned party girl by night, Sydney is hands-down the sexiest city down under. But don’t let her beauty intimidate you – like all of Australia, Sydney is relaxed in a way that makes foreigners feel right at home, as any stroll around its fascinating multicultural hoods can attest to.

Due to its shape, the Harbour Bridge is known to locals as ‘The Coat Hanger’.

First up take a ferry ride across the impossible beauty of Botany Bay, passing the shimmery white ‘shells’ of the world’s most famous opera house. For lunch, forget about shrimps thrown on the ‘barbie’ – here the locals prefer a fashionable sushi bar overlooking any one of the city’s endless beaches and rocky coves. While the glass high-rises and sparkling waterfront scream New World bravura, there are plenty of glimpses into the city’s colonial-era past, most notably in the leafy parks and red-brick mansions of inner-city Sydney.

Sydney’s George Street is the oldest street in Australia.

About Sydney

If cities were people, Sydney would be the supermodel of the Southern Hemisphere – charismatic, naturally gorgeous and impossible to ignore. So no surprise that flights to Sydney are always in high demand.

Let’s start with the basics: Sydney is one good-looking city. From the oldest part of town, Circular Quay, you have your pick of the Opera House, the Botanic Gardens or the old colonial district, the Rocks. But if you really want to get an eyeful, nothing can beat a hair-raising climb of the Harbour Bridge. From here the whole city stretches before you – from the glossy business district to the endless white beaches.

Too see this dramatic scenery close up, take a ferry to Manly, where a scenic walkway works like a time machine, taking you past 1930s beach huts and ancient aboriginal rock paintings. A little further outside the city is ‘Nasho’, the sprawling Royal National Park – 100kms of trails through rainforest and around dramatic coastline, beloved by bikers and surfers as well as walkers and dreamers.

Whatever category you fall into, Bondi Beach is well worth the bus-train-bus commute – as much for the party atmosphere as for the pristine sand. By day a mixed crowd works out at the outdoor gym near the North Bondi Surf Club. By night they hook up at the White Revolver club, where the music is loud and the shirts are louder.

Away from the water, Sydney’s nightlife is a little more edgy. If you find Kings Cross a bit rough-and-ready, try boho Newtown – a student burb which offers rooftop drinking and jazz mecca Vanguard. On the weekends, Sydney’s beautiful people brunch in Alexandria, which has taken over from arty Surry Hills and hipster Redfern as the latest ‘it’ hood. But for pure swank it’s hard to beat Woollahra, where even the dogs look like they have just stepped out of a salon.

That is not to say that the city is all beauty and no brains. Every January the Sydney Festival fills the city streets with burlesque revues, live music and traditional aboriginal performances. But year-round, the city boasts opera and theatre, live music and world-class food.

Book your flights to Sydney: a city that’s so much more than just a pretty face.
