Counter at the airport, but you take a shuttle to a different location to pick up and drop off the car. Not really an “airport location” From bag pick up to key in hand was well over 2 hours. Extra fees to cover insurance deductible. Felt like a rip off. Might be more of the same, but would try somewhere else next time.

The VW Polo I received was released to me with grabby brakes (it took a while to get the feel) I own and have owned VW vehicles and know what the brakes are supposed to feel like. The car had 3 different makes of tires on it. The two on the rear were the same and had plenty of thread on them, the front tires were different makes and the front right had no thread left, only the rain channels. This is incredibly dangerous when travelling on motorways/highways with a posted speed of 120kph. In fact, if the tire had had a blowout at that speed, Sixt would liable and responsible because they released the vehicle in unsafe condition. That particular tire developed a slow leak that required numerous stops to reinflate to the correct pressure. Overall it was a learning experience, in the future I will not only check the body for scratches I will check all four tires.

Pick up was disappointing because I was left waiting for the shuttle from the airport to pickup location for an extended period of time. Drop off was a disaster; I was told to return the car to the same location as pickup; when I arrived the gate was closed and no one was there to explain what to do with the car. Finally, I noticed an inconspicuous sign which said to return the vehicle to the airport if the gate was locked. When I arrived at the airport there was no one there to meet me or instruct what to do with the vehicle. I finally just left the car in the parking lot and went to catch my flight.

The check in agents at the airport were excellent. The shuttle driver was terrible. We waited 56 minutes for him to arrive, including time when I went back to the booking counter and requesting that they call him again. The driver was grumpy and no apology for the frustrating delay. Very unimpressive. He left more than half of the people waiting for him and had to come back again. There was no manager available at the car depot to let know about this. Very unimpressive.

Some of the reviews of the Dublin Airport location made me worried, but we were helped by the friendly Joe Meany and even got an upgraded BMW 3 series instead of the 1 series we had booked. While I did have a letter from my credit card stating that it had coverage in Ireland and Northern Ireland, we decided to pay for the basic insurance coverage as well since we were driving on the left side of narrow roads and the incremental cost for insurance was low compared to the overall cost. The trip around the island of Ireland completed without a scratch, yet given how narrow some of the roads were I'm glad we had insurance with both Sixt and my credit card. The BMW 318d itself was the best rental car I've ever had and had great handling for the narrow winding roads.
